Coeliac Disease
Overview
Coeliac Disease is a life-long autoimmune condition, which causes a person’s immune system to attack its own tissues when gluten is eaten. This causes damage to the lining of the gut and means the body cannot absorb nutrients properly.
Urgent advice: Ask for an urgent GP appointment if:
- new onset gut symptoms
- unexplained weight loss
- blood in your stool
- waking up at night to open your bowels
1 in 100 people have Coeliac Disease, and once it is diagnosed, the only treatment for the condition is a life-long gluten free diet.
